Economy to Business How To Get a Flight Upgrade
We always dream of being bumped up to business or first class dreaming of the big flight upgrade cruising around business class lounges free food free drinks odd celebrity or two all while waiting for the plane to arrive and whisk us away to a magical designation. Being upgraded on your flights are not that easy now days especially when you have a young family the last thing airlines want is young kids running up and down the aisle.
I am not promising you can get a flight upgrades every time but I have managed to negotiate a flight upgrade into business class on several of my flights and even a couple with my young family. Yes, one of my kids spilled a whole beer all over the nice lady sitting in a seat beside me also saturating her bed blanket very embarrassing I was very very apologetic. I do have a list of travel hacks that may help you get upgraded on your next flight and if you do have any other ideas please comment below.
Travel in quite times – sounds obvious but if you are traveling while in the middle of major holidays like Christmas or New Years flights are more likely to be book solid you will have a much better chance getting flight upgrades in off peak season non-school holidays and try to avoid business routes.
Join the loyalty program – Another secret is being loyal to your airline you can request to be bumped up from economy to business class or business class to first class as a great customer or use your frequent flyer miles as extra payment getting you in. Using loyalty points and the frequent flyer miles is the way I do it getting cheap flights that are on most occasions available if my travel agent or direct representative can’t upgrade me or find a better deal I use miles.
Status – if you fly a lot meaning 100,000 miles or more spending big on flights like over $15,000 a year 100 plus segments you may be entitled to an upgrade all airline have different policies you would probably already know if you are a constant elite flyer but if not call your airline and check as status mostly always beats upgrade requests.
Use Miles or Frequent Flyer Points – to upgrade we have already covered this but really using your flyer points is the easiest most agreed way to get an upgrade pending how many points or miles you have is how far you can go.
By a discount premium seat – Airlines are getting sneaky now day’s and are offering upgrades at check in at the counter desk. While checking attendants might mention an upgrade offer if you are in for an extra couple of hundred dollars you could be sitting in first class or business class” don’t forget to ask”.
Overweight or disabled – I have seen this used by some people before they get on a plane at check out try and upgrade the flight and change allocated seating. Airlines are more than willing to help organize this when you have a problem like disability, sick or overweight when you book your flight it might be a good idea to let the airline know your problems then and follow up before getting to the airport and checking in best not to wait until the last minute.
Are you on a Honeymoon – If you are on a honeymoon make sure you tell everyone travel agent flight attendant restaurant manager hotel staff you never know what will come your way people are generally nice and extra nice to newlyweds.
Is it ok to ask? – According to me yes but I have made a career for myself in sales and its second nature to me as I always try to ask intelligently and indirectly its kind of an art. My tips are to be nice and dress well you never know your luck ask indirectly and have a compelling reason for the flight upgrade like hardly anyone on the flight or wanting to be near family and friends don’t look too greedy.
